Job Summary

The Recreation Supervisor of Team Milwaukee Special Olympics oversees the planning, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of Milwaukee Recreation's community-based Special Olympics program. Key duties include athlete recruitment and registration; monitoring eligibility and behavior; hiring, training, and supervising part-time staff; managing and scheduling facilities; and coordinating athlete participation in Team Milwaukee events.

The ideal candidate is passionate about expanding access to quality Special Olympics programming, possesses strong organizational skills to manage a 12-sport program serving more than 200 athletes, and demonstrates enthusiasm for collaborating with a diverse community of individuals with cognitive disabilities and their families.

Salary Range: $64,538 - $92,688

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Physical Education, Recreation Management, Sports Management, Therapeutic Recreation, Education, or related field.
  • May substitute 2 years of full-time experience developing and supervising programs for individuals with disabilities for every 1 year of education (a minimum of 9 years of experience without a bachelor's; a minimum of 5 years with an associate's).
• A minimum of one (1) year of increasingly responsible, full-time experience in an urban setting developing and supervising programs for individuals with disabilities.
• Certified First Aid and CPR/AED or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire date.

Responsibilities

• Develops and manages all aspects associated with large-scale sporting events, including seeding meetings and game scheduling, budget development/management, recruitment and assigning of officials and volunteers, event set-up and break-down, and facility reservations.
• Initiates and maintains working relationships with athletes and their parents/caregivers, volunteers, and coaches.
• Serves as the 8-42 Agency Manager for Special Olympics Wisconsin (SOWI) and coordinates all functions of athletes competing in SOWI events, including event registration, arranging athlete transportation, maintaining sports physical paperwork, promoting athlete and coach recruitment and retention, and chaperoning athlete participation in all Special Olympics tournaments both locally and statewide.
• Recruits, hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates part-time staff and officials.
• Conducts regular site visits.
• Plans, implements, and evaluates programs for a culturally, physically, and economically diverse audience.
• Assists in preparing and coordinating promotional/informational materials.
• Assists with Recreation Department activities as needed.
• Serves on committees as required and/or assigned.
• Actively supports the MPS Five Priorities for Success.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
