The Department of Art at Wake Forest University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor, to begin July 1, 2026.
Qualifications: We seek a dynamic teacher-scholar specializing in the history of American art (broadly defined). We especially welcome candidates with research and/or teaching expertise in such areas as African American, Native American, Latinx, Arab American, and/or Queer art histories, their intersections, and their contributions to the larger field of American art and visual culture. An ability to teach film studies is also desirable. The position requires a Ph.D. in Art History and experience teaching an art history course as the primary instructor at the university level.
Job Description: Qualified applicants will demonstrate their ability to teach a combination of introductory surveys, upper-level lectures, and area-specific seminars. The teaching load is two courses per semester. Likewise, they will provide evidence of their ability to initiate and sustain original research and scholarship in their area(s) of expertise, and to contribute to an academic environment that fosters learning and growth for all its students. The successful applicant will exhibit flexibility and interest in developing new additions to the curriculum in response to the needs of the department. We especially welcome candidates who will foster connections to other departments, programs, and institutions on campus and in the local community, including the Reynolda House Museum of American Art, which is affiliated with the university.
